The Association for Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Disorders (AMEND) was set up in the UK in 2002 and aims to support patients with the rare genetic conditions of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN) types 1 and 2, where the sufferer is predisposed to developing certain growths (both benign and malignant) within the glands of the endocrine system. Almost 100% of patients with MEN type 2 develop medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). AMEND has a network of 'Telephone Buddies' who are available to anyone who needs support, be they members, non-members, friends or family. Up-to-date published information is also made available where requested. AMEND is shortly to publish its own detailed easy-to-read information on the conditions, including details on the detection, treatment and management of MTC. As well as supporting patients, AMEND aims to promote a wider knowledge of MEN among the medical profession to assist in early and accurate diagnosis. Since 2004, AMEND has also supported patients with non-genetic, or sporadic, MTC. Further information is available from AMEND's MEN2 representative, Jo:
