How I Started up a Local Group

Local Coordinator for Milton Keynes, Wilma, has sent in her experiences of starting up a local group.

After attendng the local coordinators’ training event in September 2001, I placed an advert in the BTFNews asking for help in setting up a group in the Milton Keynes area. Happily I had eleven responses from very eager BTF members who offered to help me in what I thought would be a mammoth task. We had our first Founder Group Member meeting in March 2002 which resulted in our first Information Event in June 2002. There was standing room only, with over 70 people with thyroid conditions and their families attending. Positive feedback and raising the awareness and profile of the BTF was gained, along with achieving the BTF objectives. On the left is a photograph of our Founder Member Group who all contributed in the planning and delivery of the event, for which I am very grateful. We meet regularly to plan and evaluate the four information events that we will hold annually. If anyone is thinking of setting up a group – it can be done. We did it… and so can you!
