Patient information day: thyroid guidelines update

Come along to our next information event on Saturday 8 February where medical professionals and patients will discuss the latest guidelines on the mangement of thyroid disease. 

The meeting will take place at The Abbey Centre, 34 Great Smith Street, Westminster, London SW1P 3BU from 10.30 to 16.00. The registration fee, which includes lunch and refreshments, is £15 for BTF members and £25 for non-members. *

The aim of the meeting is to provide information about the current best practice guidelines for the management of thyroid disorders in so far as they affect adults. In particular speakers will focus on the NICE guidelines which will be published in November 2019. The meeting will not cover thyroid eye disease, pregnancy, thyroid surgery or thyroid cancer.

We have lined up some excellent speakers, most of whom were members of the NICE committee.

The programme will include:

Dr Renee Hoenderkamp, GP (London)

  • diagnosing and managing hypothyroidism in primary care
  • including subclinical hypothyroidism

Dr David Halsall, Consultant Clinical Scientist and Director of Specialist Endocrine Testing Laboratory (Cambridge)

  • understanding TFTs, reference ranges, what can interfere with the results
  • unusual results… which tests are necessary

Dr Kristien Boelaert, Consultant Endocrinologist (Birmingham)

  • managing thyroid disease: an endocrinologist’s view
  • goitres and nodules
  • what’s new in the NICE guidelines

Dr Anh Tran, GP (Surrey)

  • the GP's role in the care of patients with hyperthyroidism including extracts from NICE guidelines 
  • primary care thyroid projects

Professor Mark Gurnell, Consultant Endocrinologist (Cambridge)

  • overview of research priorities in thyroid disease
  • how research studies are planned and funded
  • importance of patient involvement and how patients can get involved

Programme

Depending on interest we will run parallel sessions on:

(1) Treatment for hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine; and

(2) Treatment of hypothyroidism with liothyronine (L-T3)

To help us plan the event please indicate on the registration form if you have a preference for either of these topics.
