Description of Role

You will share responsibility for the governance of the British Thyroid Foundation (BTF) and will fully understand the charity’s purpose as set out in its governing document. You will have strategic oversight of the planning for what the charity wants to achieve and be able to explain how the BTF’s activities supports its objectives. You will always act in the charity’s best interest and ensure accountability within the charity. You will ensure that BTF’s funds are used properly and for the charity’s purposes. You must make use of your skills that you bring to the board.

Skills and qualities needed for the role

We are looking for Charity Management, Finance and Fundraising skills. However, we would be grateful to hear from you if you feel that you have a skill to offer, and the commitment needed to become a BTF trustee.

Practical Information

The BTF Trustee Board (the Board) meets face to face at least once a year and virtual meetings take place at least once every two months. You would be initially elected to serve a single term (3 years) on the Board.

Other Information

The BTF will meet all travel and other relevant expenses incurred while carrying out your duties directly for the benefit for the charity. A DBS check is not required. Face to face meetings will be held in venues that have wheelchair access.

Charity information

We understand that being diagnosed and living with a thyroid disorder can have a substantial impact on a person’s life. We are a membership organisation dedicated to supporting people with thyroid disorders and their families.

We provide the following information and support for people affected by thyroid disorders in the following ways:

  • Patient literature about all thyroid conditions, symptoms, and treatments. Our patient leaflets are also available in Urdu, Polish, Arabic and Mandarin. Our leaflets are sent out free of charge to patients, hospitals, and clinics in the UK.
  • A series of patient experience films
  • A comprehensive website btf-thyroid.org
  • Various projects to benefit thyroid patients of all ages
  • BTF News – our 16-page newsletter is sent out three times a year
  • Peer support offered by user-led local groups across the UK
  • A network of volunteer telephone contacts
  • Patient and public information events, face to face and virtual
  • A medical query answering service 
  • Closed Facebook groups offering support to people affected by thyroid disorders
  • Research funding - we offer a £20,000 Annual Research Award
  • Support for nurses - two £500 Nurse Awards
  • We work in close partnership with the British Thyroid Association(BTA), the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS) and the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED)
