The Joe Plater BTF Thyroid Cancer Research Award 2020

Joe Plater is a YouTuber and live streamer who was diagnosed with Follicular Thyroid Cancer in 2016 and then Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer later in 2018. Joe regularly vlogs his treatment to raise awareness and help others who might be in the same situation.

Through his reach on YouTube he has been able to hold a number of 24-hour gaming live streams to raise funds for the work of the BTF.

Joe has recently become a BTF patron and says 'Despite the trials of thyroid cancer treatment I have found a way to not only help myself but also others through livestreaming. Having used it to rebuild my voice after surgery I can now use that voice to support the BTF and the work they do'.

We are delighted to offer a £20K BTF thyroid cancer research award in his name. Joe has provided invaluable support to the BTF and to thyroid patients since his diagnosis with thyroid cancer in 2016.

The award can be used to supplement existing projects or to help get research ideas started.

We are keen to support the crucial role that researchers fulfill in providing the best treatment for people with thyroid disorders.

The BTF is an NIHR partner organisation in respect of its research awards funding stream. Studies funded through this funding stream are eligible for inclusion in the NIHR Clinical Research Network Portfolio and therefore able to access NHS support via the NIHR Clinical Research Network infrastructure.
