Thyroid and menopause

Thyroid disorders are ten times more common in women than in men. The risk of developing an underactive thyroid also increases with age. So it is not unusual for midlife women going through peri/menopause to also have a thyroid condition.

As symptoms often overlap, it can be difficult to establish which are related to the thyroid and which to peri/menopause. We have worked with Prof Annice Mukherjee, consultant endocrinologist with a special interest in menopause, to explore these issues further and provide some answers for midlife women.
