Hypothyroidism 

NHS prescriptions are free in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

in England prescriptions are charged at £9.90 per item.

If you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) you require treatment for, you are entitled to free prescriptions for all your medicines in  England.

As it is a long-term condition, you can apply for a medical exemption certificate to claim your free prescriptions.

Your GP surgery can give you an application form for a medical exemption certificate. This form is called an FP92A. You will need to fill in the form and get your doctor to sign it.

The condition you need to tick is ‘Myxoedema - For example, hypothyroidism which needs thyroid hormone replacement.’

Hypoparathyroidism is also on the list of conditions which exempt you from prescription charges.

Hyperthyroidism

If you have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) you do not qualify for free NHS prescriptions in England. This is because hyperthyroidism is not, generally, a condition requiring continuous, lifelong medication.

Reduce the cost of your prescriptions

If you live in England and have to pay for your prescriptions, you can reduce the cost of these by buying a Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC). A PPC is valid for either 3 or 12 months and covers all your prescriptions for that period, no matter how many you need.
