Thyroid nodules with normal thyroid function do not usually require further monitoring with an ultrasound if:

  • they are deemed benign after investigation with ultrasound and, where appropriate, fine needle aspiration
  • your thyroid function tests are normal
  • they are not causing compression or breathing difficulty

However, your doctor may wish to check your thyroid function every one to two years to ensure your thyroid hormone levels are not changing.

Thyroid ultrasound and TSH measurement will usually be repeated in adults with benign thyroid nodules if:

  • the nodule is getting bigger
  • the nodule feels harder
  • a new lump appears
  • you develop difficulties swallowing or breathing
  • your voice becomes hoarse
