Support Patient stories Ian and hyperthyroidism All sorts goes through your mind, especially with unexplained weight loss. It was a relief (in a funny sort of way) when I found out the diagnosis. Unexplained weight loss, fatigue and palpitations were just some of the symptoms Ian experienced before being diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. He’s shared his story to encourage anyone with symptoms to see their doctor promptly and let others know they are not alone. Can you tell us which conditions you have been diagnosed with? I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism last summer aged 52. To date, the exact cause hasn’t been confirmed as neither Graves’ disease nor nodules have shown up on the tests they have carried out. What symptoms did this cause? My symptoms were unexplained weight loss (total 13 pounds), pale complexion, heart palpitations and fatigue. How were they picked up on? My diagnosis came about after having blood tests at my doctor's surgery. The results were sent as an urgent referral just 24 hours later. What treatment were you given? The consultant prescribed carbimazole (40mg) and propranolol. I also went for a thyroid scan at the hospital in September, which gave no further concerns. The carbimazole has been gradually reduced to the 5mg daily I currently take. The propranolol remained at 60mg daily for some time but I have just been told I can come off this. At my most recent blood tests, my TSH had gone back into normal range. I am currently waiting on another hospital appointment to see what the next step is as obviously we don’t want a relapse. Once I have had this appointment, I'll know if the medication can be stopped altogether or reduced. How are you feeling now? I have regained some weight and look healthier. I am due a blood test in 2 weeks and depending on results may only need them 3 monthly as opposed 6 weekly I've been having. What have been the most difficult parts of your journey? The difficult part at the start was when the doctor said: ‘We cannot rule out anything nasty at this stage.’ All sorts goes through your mind, especially with unexplained weight loss. It was a relief (in a funny sort of way) when I found out the diagnosis. Was it difficult for those around you to understand what you were going through? Work colleagues had expressed their concerns about my appearance. As a naturally skinny man, losing 13 pounds really showed and I was very bony to touch especially around my shoulders, back and chest areas. Did you manage to find some support? My line manager was fantastic. They regularly had one-on-ones with me and asked if there was anything at all I needed, constantly saying all I needed to do was ask. What would you say to anyone on their own thyroid journey? If this is you right now, make that appointment today to see your GP. I have read up on the condition, and realise that if left unchecked things can become very serious so please, do not wait! The condition is treatable and you get some peace knowing you are regularly checked by your doctor through blood tests. There is still uncertainty for me about whether I'll need medication for life or a limited time. Unfortunately, the process does take time, but I put my faith in the doctors to ensure I'm as healthy as can be. A big thank you to them; they have been amazing! Good luck, you are not alone!
