Why is iodine important?

Women need more iodine in pregnancy. This supports the body to produce enough thyroid hormones, as these are essential to help your unborn baby’s brain development. It is also important that you have enough iodine when breastfeeding. This helps ensure your breastmilk has enough iodine in it to support your baby’s developing brain.

Can I take iodine supplements?

If you have a diagnosed and treated thyroid condition, you can safely take prenatal supplements containing iodine (approximately 150mcg daily). It is also important to avoid excess iodine (more than 500 mcg daily).
