Information and support For professionals Iodine intake in conception, pregnancy and postpartum The recommended daily intake of iodine in conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding is 200-250mcg. This supports the body to produce enough thyroid hormones, as these are essential to help the baby’s brain development. Counsel women to increase their dietary intake of iodine-rich foods or take prenatal supplements containing iodine. In women who have a diagnosed and treated thyroid condition, they can safely take prenatal supplements containing iodine (approximately 150mcg daily). They should avoid excess iodine (more than 500 mcg daily).
