A thyroid scan can be used to assess unusual lumps in the thyroid or to measure how well the thyroid is working.

it is used to evaluate:

• causes for thyrotoxicosis (overactivity)
• thyroid nodules
• suspected ectopic thyroid tissue
• the activity and/or location of the thyroid gland in neonatal hypothyroidism
