Information and support For professionals Pregnancy and thyroid disorders: for professionals An undiagnosed or uncontrolled thyroid condition can make it harder to get pregnant. It can also increase the risk of miscarriage and harm the developing baby. With appropriate management and regular monitoring of thyroid levels, most women can go on to have a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby. It is therefore vital that women are given information and support to reduce these risks and improve outcomes. To help women access the best care before, during and after pregnancy, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) published its 2025 Green-top guideline on the Management of Thyroid Disorders in Pregnancy. This is a summary of the key recommendations to help you manage your patients’ thyroid health at this critical time: Overt hypothyroidism Subclinical hypothyroidism . Hyperthyroidism Positive antibodies but normal thyroid function 'At risk' groups for developing abnormal thyroid function in pregnancy Gestational transient thyrotoxicosis Postpartum thyroiditis Thyroid nodules and cancer Iodine intake to support conception, pregnancy and breastfeeding Further information We have Pregnancy and Thyroid Disorders Guidance to help patients understand more about their thyroid disorder and how it may affect, or be affected by, pregnancy.
